Tottenham may have decided Lucas Bergvall is not for sale, but the midfielder has now explained exactly what he wants from next season after Sweden’s World Cup exit.

This last week, British press reported Spurs had informed Bergvall he would not be leaving this summer, despite speculation over his future during the World Cup. Seems Roberto De Zerbi personally told the 20-year-old that Tottenham have no intention of selling him.

Bergvall has now had his own say. Speaking to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet after Sweden’s elimination at the hands of France, the midfielder first reflected on the performance and his own display.

After becoming Sweden’s youngest-ever World Cup player against Tunisia earlier in the tournament, he was asked whether this had been his breakthrough with the national team.

“It’s difficult to say straight afterwards. You have mixed feelings,” Bergvall replied. “But it felt like both I and the team were switched on from the start. We were in control and created some chances.”

“But France were the better team and deserved to go through.”

Tottenham future remains open

Naturally, the conversation then turned to Tottenham. Recent transfer gossip had suggested Bergvall was considering leaving the club in search of more playing time, while other sources suggested Spurs have already closed the door on that possibility. And this wave of speculation proved to be quite exhausting for him.

Bergvall, though, chose his words carefully.

“I want continuous matches in my position. That is the only goal. We’ll see what happens in the future”, he said. “I’ve only been focused on the World Cup until now.”

He was then asked directly whether he wanted to remain in the Premier League.

“As I said, my focus has been on the World Cup. We’ll deal with whatever comes next. I don’t know – we’ll see.”

Those answers neither confirm nor deny anything. Instead, they reinforce one clear message: regular football in his preferred midfield role is Bergvall’s priority.

New competition arriving

Lucas Bergvall’s comments also come as Tottenham move to strengthen the same area of the squad.

Spurs have reportedly reached an agreement with West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes… Who plays in the same midfield positions as Bergvall, potentially creating even greater competition for minutes next season.

Despite that, Tottenham’s position appears firm. De Zerbi reportedly wants Bergvall to stay, and the Sweden international remains an important part of the club’s long-term plans after making 33 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, scoring one goal and providing four assists.

The player’s own comments, however, show exactly what he expects going into the new campaign. He wants consistent football, he wants it in his preferred position, and everything else can be discussed once the World Cup is behind him.
